DELG; the translation ὀλεθρίας is folk etymology). - Denom. γραΐζω `remove the γραῦς of the milk' (Ar.); from γραῖα : γραιόομαι `get old', of wine (AP).

Etymology: From the root *gerh₂- in γέρων, γέρας. Prob. \< *γρᾱ-ι̯υ- \<*greh₂-i̯u- with -ι̯υ- as in ὑύς `son' (pl. υἷες ). - S. Berger Münch. Stud. z. Sprachwiss. 3, 5f.. Cf. γέρων, γέρας, γῆρας. (Does not contain *h₂oiu, αἰών with Szemerényi.)
